If you are also going to go down front to solo or play ballads on the trumpet, not the flugal, the fat Doc sound makes more sense to me. Some guys can darken and fatten their cutting sound and some can't or won't. I have heard some great "lazer" players come out front and not make it "to my ears" because of the thin, edgy sound. When they go back in the section they sound great on top the cushion of the inner parts.
