I live about 50 miles north of NYC, so I take a commuter railroad (1 hour) which gets me into Grand Central. If my gig is in midtown (most theaters and many recording studios are there) then I'll just walk (15 mins.). When the job is not a walkable distance from Grand Central, I'll take the subway. Traffic is usually so bad that the subway ends up being faster than a taxi (and cheaper). It's not bad for me, but I feel bad for bassists & cellists when I see them trying to navigate their instuments in the subway.

The drag about living far away is that I have to leave 2 - 2 1/2 hours to get to work everyday.

The distance must be a drag, but with great rewards. Thankyou for the thorough reply!

The joke is good too! haha
