Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording

The wet noodle could end up being the best mouthpiece...........................
Walter, we always need more to go on. There is so much more to a personal choice like a mouthpiece.
As a rule, the mouthpieces sold with mass produced trumpets are not the best ones.
Schilke advocated NO gap - and his mouthpieces were hallmarked for excellent intonation with just about any trumpet (I used an 18 for 20 years!).
I use a Monette B2D with excellent results in all of my Bb horns (even the pre 1900 historic ones). There are many specialty shops that can custom make and gap and plate and polish and calculate - in the end, you will only find out when you stick it in the trumpet. If it is vintage, the receiver may even be worn, further complicating the choice. If it is vintage, it may not even be 100% original.
Do you see where I am coming from. Too many factors to make a blanket recommendation for someone whose chops, body, lungs, ears, musical preference and particular vintage Olds Recording that I am not familiar with.
Try whatever you have now, that is cheapest. If it works, congratulations. If it doesn't, maybe it is the horn and not the mouthpiece. In that case you can sink more into mouthpiece trials than the horn cost. A good repair shop can check the obvious, let us know what happens!
