Re: Paying for music

I'm puzzled by the attitude towards piracy I've seen expressed by a lot of people (not on this thread, I'm speaking in general terms here). Somehow, because it's easy to copy CDs, it's sometimes viewed as acceptable.

I've heard "well, artists only get pennies from each sale, the label really makes most of it" which may have a grain of truth - though without the label, the CD wouldn't be released. But each stolen jazz CD is a bigger percentage of overall sales than for a top 40 CD. And since the artist agreed to their contract with the label, shouldn't we also that decision?

I know I'm preaching to the choir here. My point is that I encourage everyone to address this topic with their peers/students when the opportunity presents itself. If no one buys jazz CDs, there will be less jazz CDs released in the future, and thus less exposure for the music.
