Either way I never do wipe them off. I either wash the trumpet or just oil away.
That's my feeling too. I think wiping valves and casings can introduce more than it removes. If you're worried about particulate matter, wash out your horn in warm, weak, dish detergent water once in a while, swabbing as you go.
If your lubricant is thin enough, like Blue Juice, it will help wash out the valve assembly. I mix mine with a little odorless lamp oil so it lasts longer.
