My buddy Ted Curson and his wife Marge were celebrating their wedding anniversary yesterday at the Blue Note. Lots of familiar faces were there. Clark Terry and James Moody were the headliners. Jon Faddis was there hanging out with some of his trumpet studio. Our own Dow30 was there, it is always great to hang with Kim. Frank Greene was there. It was a wonderful night.
Clark called out to all the trumpet trumpet players to join him on stage. Thank goodness I left my mouthpiece home

Faddis took his "A Game" to even a higher level.......and I had a ringside seat. Jon was playing his Schilke, it is a much heavier horn than I remember Jon playing.
Now here's the good part..........Ted didn't have his horn, but he did have his mouthpiece. So did one of Jon's students. Jon passed his horn to Ted. Ted sounded like himself. Ted's sound is kind of Milesish, with a bit of Brownie mixed in. Jon's student, I didn't catch his name, played with a totally different more contemporary approach.
The three players sounds completely different even though they played the same horn. Hmmmmmmm
More later,
