Big Woody fan of course- the first album I got was WoodyIII. It was too heavy for my ears at the time but as I learned more and listened to more music (not just jazz) I fell deeply in love with both his tunes and his incredible voice on the trumpet.
Never actually transcribed any Woody solos (maybe half a chorus on Green Dolphin Street?..) as I really didn't want to end up copping Woody licks but rather, wanted to play compositionally in the way he did. I definitely played along with the tunes (and lifted and arranged many of them) and solos and learned a ton!
