| Re: Try this Charlie Shavers was a true jazz great and when Wilmer says he didn't back down even to Roy, that's saying a lot, because Roy was the resident lion. John McNeil sees Shavers as a progenitor of Fats Navarro and Clifford, whereas Diz came from Roy. I tend to agree. Another collosal trumpeter who tends to get overlooked: Hot Lips Page. He wouldn't back down to either Roy or Shavers! To hear Charlie at his best, check the various incarnations of the John Kirby Sextet, Charlie with Norris Turney, O'Neill Spencer, Billy Kyle and Ruseell Procope. What a band!
