What made this music seem so interminably self-indulgent were not the flights of imagination or the chance meetings of harmony and contrapuntal line, but, instead, the depressing freedom of it all. How inspiring can be the insight of the moment, the leap into something new, but such conscious capitulation to chaos as this appeared ultimately an act of laziness, not creation.
