Before deciding for the Spada I tried quite a few piccs...Kanstul, Stomvi, Selmer, Scherzer, Schilke. I have also very unclear memory of playing a friend's Yammie, but would not be able to give a review. I wish I could test the Eclipse one too before deciding for Spada, but as it is still in experimental stage it was obviously impossible.
When deciding for Spada I was seriously considering Scherzer and F. Besson as possible choices. Let me give you the reasons of choice. The Scherzer is a wonderful horn, with very free blowing feel, very sweet tone and excellent intonation, but I found quite difficult the extreme high range, and on this stage I needed something more versitile. Furthermore, it is not the ideal horn for those orchestral picc solo like petrushka or the Pictures...Another advantage I saw is that the with a piston valve I can turn pages while playing if needed to, which is almost impossible with a rotary. Another advantage that the piston gives me is the 1st piston slide trigger which seems more easy to put on a piston valve though not many piston valve picc maker offer either (I asked Felix from NYTC if they could do this on thier picc, but he refused, saying that the slide was too small for that)
So I was left with the F. Besson which could be customised to get this optional trigger on or take Spada thing. As putting the trigger was quite expensive, which makes the difference not really significant (around 700-800$) and the Spada had a rounder sound I decided for the Spada.
When I decide to buy a f/g trumpet, I think that I will go for the Scherzer piccolo, cause for a lower picc, the Scherzer sound seems perfect. Probably I will use that one mainly for baroque stuff like bach cantatas and some other C major stuf, so turning pages won't be an issue, and extreme hihg range won't be needed. But this will be when I manage to pay off the loan for the spada picc and get some more money for another expensive horn...
