All of the above AND-
1.record yourself (with the metronome) and play the bass notes or bass lines that fit the chords.(play along with bass players-8va or whatever octave that needs to move)
2. Record the changes (maybe slower than needed) on piano or guitar ..or band in the box of one of those programs...
3. Practice the tune in different keys, different meters
4. Do what Mike says but I would add, your understanding of time will increase if you put the metronome on a variety of beats. 1 and 3, just 1, just 4, hear the beat as the AND of 1 and 3, etc....
