Lessons by Richard Boleslavsky. The first publication of this book was in 1933. (Just read the first few pages and you will understand why I suggested it.)
If none of these floats anyone's boat, I suggest reading books on your favorite composers. I have read tons of books on Mahler and Stravinksy. It is fun, informative and eye-opening to find out who these composers were as people.
