I've worked with guys that have the "big fat" sound that almost kills you standing beside them but out front it doesn't carry that far (ie: laser beam) One of the greatest lead players to come out of Canada is Arnie Chycoski. (lead with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass) Playing second trumpet beside him was always a treat because the pitch was always right on and there was enough of his sound to balance to but most of it went out into the room. If you stood out front of the band and right in his line of fire, you got "the laser" with "fatness". I agree that it also depends on the musical situation and we should be able to make slight changes to accomodate that. |
