Spot on. When starting out, the trumpet is such a difficult instrument that it has hard enough to learn to play, let alone learn to play to a particular style. As Rowuk says so aptly, get a teacher and if you are still serious about playing Ska stuff when you have "mastered" the basics, you will be in a better position to do what you want...
