Carol Dawn Reinhart started out on a slide trumpet. She was four years old. Her parents started her out on a slide trumpet because a small person can balance the weight of a slide horn easier than the cornet with the weight forward. She switched to cornet when she got a little bigger and the rest is history.
I would think a slide trumpet in a Dixie Land band would be a pretty good act.
A slide trumpet would fit into the entertainment venues of Renaisance fairs pretty well at least in the United States where authenticity is secondary to making money and entertaining the crowd.
