Very interesting article without any "prejudice".
As far as the Hainlein natural trumpet goes (I also built one) it seems that the "imperfections" and "irregularities" of the hand hammered horn actually make it easier to play. The slotting is not as good as with the machine produced horns making it easier to lip into tune!
So yes, an artisan has to weigh the necessities of the player versus the necessities of the manufacturing process.
