I've had 3 done that I can think of: A '49 Olds Ambassador, a 60's Olds L-12 flugel, and a '55 Mount Vernon Bach Strad. They were all terrible looking, lacquer 50% or more gone. I honestly could tell no difference in the way they played after the new lacquer. Maybe it's because I'm a hack, but I really can't feel differences supposedly caused by various coatings, heavy caps, mouthpiece sleeves, etc. I think that the basic design of a horn - leadpipe, bell shape, metal thickness and type, etc., and the mouthpiece used, have a far greater impact on the playing qualities of a horn than do a couple microns of silver or gold plating, or clear lacquer (or whatever they use these days).
