What a day!
I attended The Jazz Foundation Of America's dinner that honored Lawrence Lucie. He celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday. Lawrence Lucie truly is a living legend. John Orr, Frank Wess and a few other greats were in attendance. It was a night to remember.
On my way to the dinner, I literally walked into Jonathan Tunick. Jonathan, for those unaware, is the arranger of the new film "Sweeney Todd." I had the pleasure of playing the Broadway run of the show, which was also scored by Jonathan. We played the show on C trumpets, something unheard of then.
The soundtrack was done in England, Jonathan said the orchestra played great, so I guess I will see the movie
Wynton was one of my subs during the show, he was fresh from New Orleans and skinny as a rail. That was twenty-eight years ago. Wow.
