I am guessing a mixture of dehydration (if the band was playing late in the day and it was a young person because bands drink like fish and if you aren't on the booze you will be on the coca cola which is a diuretic) and possibly nerves causing him not to breath properly. Its soprano cornet and that can be a bit of a challenge if your breathing is not quite right. He may have not been expelling enough of the co2 out of his lungs but still breathing in.
