In my experience a lot of people use AIM and some people also use Jabber / XMPP (Google Chat is based on this protocol). I used to have a 6-digit ICQ ID and sold it on eBay for $100 back in the day. People are silly!
I also chat on IRC, but that is way too old-school for a lot of people here. :)
