To be a great trumpet player, you need $10,000 in instruments and mouthpieces.
What makes a person good is the opportunities available. The more chances you have to play with fine musicians and ensembles, the better you will get. That is why a DIY approach is always limited (Unless you are Glenn Gould). 10,000 ensembles would be a real trumpet builder!
