My advice regarding standards is to refuse to play tunes you don´t know in any situation... If you are asked to sit in, the musicians should be generous enough to play the two or three tunes that you call. The band will appreciate your confidence and you feel much more in control, and will give yourself the opportunity to play your best.

Find like minded people you can start a band with, compose, and try to delevop the band so that it brings out the best of all the individual parts, then find a place to gig....
