How to land your first "gig"

Everyone hears the big names in orchestras, the likes of Bud, and Chris Martin being two of the most well-known names. But it takes time to get there, and many other orchestras before you have the experience for the larger orchestras. What are some tips you have for getting that first playing job in an orchestra. I will likely start with the college orchestra here in the next few semesters, but will that be enough experience to get into a decent middle of the line orchestra?
