You need the fourth valvce to play the bottom concert D in baroque parts.
For this reason I would not advise getting a three valve piccolo trumpet.
There was a documentary on the TV here about a young choir conductor doing the Magnificat with his school orchestra. I was dreading the trumpet sound but the two young guys (probably about 16 years old) got out their piccolo trumpets and made a very good job of it.
