I was the opposite of you. I didn't really listen to anything classical until late in high school. My music culture growing up was mostly watching a TV variety show called Hee Haw. (No I'm not kidding.) Does anyone out there remember Hee Haw? Anyway I listened to mostly country music until middle school and then I got hit with the head banger bug. So playing with Metallica was especially exciting for me because I liked them growing up.
