| Re: Bach 3c sized mouthiece with a larger throat After many years and several draws filled with mps in my basement, I've come to the realization that when you start to alter the size of the throat on a mp, the backbore has to eventuallly be altered as well to help balance the mp. I have found that drastic throat size changes usually throw the entire balance off. Going from 27 to 26 is cool....however going from 27 to 22 can sometimes throw you off a bit. Today we're quite fortunate that there are many wonderful mp makers with great knowledge.....I'm happy that we can find them on the internet and contact them easily with FAQ's.
In play a Kanstul CG3. The rim is based on an older cornet mp design which is quite round and considered to be sharp by some, however the inner rim diameter is based on a Bach 3C. The standard throat size on these mps is 23. I'm sure that you're aware that the standard throat size on a Bach 3C is 27. The backbore on the CG3 is larger as well to help compensate for the larger throat. I do about 80% of my work on this mp.
BTW, I have played a Stork/Vacchiano 3C---
The cup is closer to a V shape and it appears that the thoat is a bit larger. I knew Stork from his work when he was the custom mp guy at Giardinelli's in NYC. His work is world class. |
