I've never played a Cannonball trumpet, but there really shouldn't be any reason why you can't get a bright sound on a 3C. Equipment doesn't enable you to do things, it makes doing things easier. I like a big, dark sound, and I can get the sound I want on a Bach 7C. The reason I play a large Monette mouthpiece is because I don't have to put nearly as much effort into getting that sound.
There are a lot of things you can do conceptually to brighten up your sound. Thinking about quickening your airstream is probably the best one I can give you. Listening and getting the right sound in your head is also key. When you finally get the sound you're looking for, then go shopping for a mouthpiece that will make obtaining that sound easier.
