It's a little hard for me to say without seeing you play, but I would suggest based on your description that you try an find a reputable teacher somewhere in your area. If you PM me where you are I can try an help you find someone.
As for flexibilities. It's not my place to comment on what you have been told by another trumpet player however I will tell you that being flexible is a very important part of my playing. I would strongly advise you to keep working at it.
