In Germany there are many classical players that tongue between the teeth directly on the lips to get a very positive start to the tone - even at ppppp. It is also used for extreme secco passages.
This is VERY contrary to what I was taught in the states in the 70's. I have to admit that since I got used to it, it does offer advantages in certain situations as well as additional articulation "sounds".
