I did it ONCE decades back...when I learned just as you have that "oops" they fit in backwards. When I went to blow through the horn, I found out quickly. Since then, with all horns, but ESPECIALLY with the Benge...I LOOK into the valve block to make sure things are lined up correctly as I insert the valve.
