Anhydrous Lanolin from the drugstore, cheap, dependable and easy to remove when cleaning. It is not poisonous and can get the perfect consistency for the first and 3rd valves with a drop of valve oil. The tuning slide and 2nd valve should be applied undiluted.

I do not like vasoline because it is not thick enough for the tuning slide and 2nd valve slide and it is not viscous enough to keep the slided covered. Metal to metal contact means WEAR!
