Re: Instrumentation

I was 3rd trumpet in the Signature Jazz Orchestra (Louisiville, KY) for a few years. We played what I called Big Band and Swing music mostly. Jazz is a difficult thing to define in some parts of the world - some a wide definition and some a very narrow definition.

But this is what we did in the trumpet section:
1st - lead
2nd - took the adlib solos or ride or what ever its called in your neighborhood
3rd -
4th -
and 5th when we were lucky to have five.

We also passed around parts so the solos, rides and lead (depending on the degree of difficulty and who could play it well) were played by any seating position.

This is what I have found to "be common."
