Lee's speaking voice is all over the place on "Live at the Lighthouse," which is my favorite album of his. It's edgy sort of like Freddie Hubbard or Woody Shaw, but it still has that badass Lee Morgan feel going for it. This video looks and sounds like it was recorded around the same time, especially since it has Jymie Merritt and Harold Mabern on it.

And yes, that is true about getting shot by his wife (or ex-wife, or whatever... I think that was the subject of their argument). He was 33 when it happened. What is it with really good jazz trumpet players and dying young? Lee, Clifford Brown, Fats Navarro, Booker Little...
