| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? When I decided that I wanted to do band in middle school (decision made in grade 5) I had to fight with my parents to get the to let me. I was one of those kids who loved to start projects and not finish. Well, they finally agreed to let me try under the stipulation that I COULD NOT play drums. Skip a few months ahead to instrument try out day. Our Director had everyone write down on an index card the 3 instruments they were most interested in, in order. 1. Tpt, 2. Oboe, 3, Euphonium
She then took students 1 at a time into her office and had us blow into the mouthpieces and if it was decent, into the horn. (There was someone else in the next office over doing woodwinds as well) I first tried Euph and had a decent sound on it, then trumpet, again good sound. She looked at me with a smile and said that both were really good and that if I wanted, I could try the oboe or I could choose one. I told her, I'll take the trumpet, it's smaller. (at the time I was probably 4'3" 70 lbs; now 5'10" 135 lbs.) Best decision I ever made. Then again, i think it chose me more so than my choosing it.
