| Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument? Actually, trumpet is not my main instrument. I'm really a woodwind player, playing tenor sax in a couple community bands. I always wanted to play trumpet though because I've worshipped Herb Alpert since high school. When I was 15 i went out and bought a trumpet at a pawn shop and tried to learn how to play. Both my clarinet teacher at the time and my band leader strongly discouraged me from learning (imagine that!) insisting it would ruin my embouchure. Well, I listened to them and the trumpert went into the closet where it sat for over 20 years.
Just a few months ago, for some unknown reason, I started itching to play again and decided to start lessons at the local music store. I take lessons once a week and I am absolutely LOVING IT! Just being able to play Spanish Flea and hit most of the high notes most of the time has made it so worthwhile. It's really exciting to know that I can do this. Going from a woodwind to brass is not easy at all but so rewarding. I don't think a teacher should ever discourage a student from wanting to try something new. I never should have listened to them! |
