Actually the original manuscript is in E major. There was an E trumpet at that time as well. Haydn's concerto was written for E-flat keyed trumpet, few years later an E trumpet is invented and Hummel writes his piece. There are plenty of books and articles on these pieces and the keyed trumpet out there.

As far as which one is the right one to play....well play the one that fits you the best. E version works better for the orchestra as well as having some parts in the strings in the correct octaves. For the E-flat version some modification was done in the strings to make it playable.

Hard to justify buying a trumpet for just one piece. Yamaha makes a great E-flat/E combination.
