Not so crazy! One of the reasons I left the professional world was because many of the venues and/or types of gigs I did were harmful to my ears. When I play with my current jazz orchestra we rehearse so our bells aren't pointing behind the trombone section, the drummer in a position where his cymbals aren't smack in someones ears, etc.. We make sure sound levels for amplified instruments are kept at a decent level. Everyone should be sensitive to decibel levels and practice and perform accordingly!
