The 1st basoon in our orchestra sat directly in front of the second trumpet, and he did go deaf. It was fun at the time, though. We sat in the back row. The year after I left, the conductor moved the trombones behind the trumpets, and my former colleagues did not enjoy the experience. I for one, would rather go deaf than wear earplugs.
