I think flutes are able to switch to any brass instrument well. I've heard that it's because the embrochure is similar (except that the flute embrochure does not directly contact the mouthpiece) I think in the Arban's book it says somewhere in the beginning that the double and triple tonguing concept for brass was borrowed from flutes.
anyway, I know a flutist who had to switch to tuba for marching band. By the end of sophmore year, he made it to Wind Ensemble in Tuba.
So yea, switch from flute to brass is definitely plausible.
