Re: Critique-Parable for Solo Trumpet

Hi Bill,

Sorry for the tardy response. Persichetti was my theory/comp teacher at Juilliard. He once critiqued one of my offerings with "as a composer you make a fine trumpet player". Oh well. You can't win them all.

You sound terrific in this clip. Keep playing the Parable and it will grow with each performance.

A few comments made while listening:

1) Consider a breath attack at the very beginning? The opening C should come from nothing, as "clarinet-like" as possible. . .
2) Great sounding cup mute and nice dynamic contrast.
3) Don't worry about the printed dynamic on the high A after the mute comes out. Just let it bloom -- it will be loud enough by virtue of being unmuted.
4) Watch that your vibrato doesn't get too wide on sustained notes.

A generic comment on performing music of this sort: concentrate on the silence surrounding you when playing unaccompanied trumpet music. This deeper listening will suck the audience into your world.

Bravo and thank you for posting this. What else was on your recital?

Best,
EC
