Re: "Pawn Shop Prizes" -- Anyone find any "Gems

The woman I'm dating told me the other day she had an old trumpet in her attic she had bought in a lot of musical instruments at auction. She was only buying the lot to get the Gibson guitar. She paid $700 for the lot and sold the Gibson for $4000. She also sold a violin out of the lot for $2000. So she said I could just have the trumpet. She said it was old and junky and was probably not worth anything.

I thought it would be a worn out Olds or something similar, but it turned out to be a beautiful King Liberty S/N 111XXX from the late 20's! It plays so well and is in really fine shape for such an old horn. The intonation is also surprisingly accurate. The second valve is corroded and a couple of slides are stuck, but it converts to A so I think I'll use it for orchestra gigs if the transposition is tricky.

It has a very distinct sound and just begs to be played with a fat cheesy Harry James vibrato above the staff.

What a lucky find (it was lucky finding the trumpet too).

Keep your eyes and ears open!
