The 29th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival (Aug 29 - Sept 1,2008) .

Jazz Fest 2008 will celebrate the rich musical traditions of Philadelphia and Detroit and the “Trane” that connects them. Billed as A Love Supreme: the Philly/Detroit Summit, the festival will feature Philadelphia native and renowned bassist Christian McBride as artist in residence.

Other featured artists include vocalist Dianne Reeves, Hank Jones, Gerald Wilson, and Philadelphia stalwarts Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and Pat Martino. The festival will also boast headliners Roy Hargrove, James Carter, Ravi Coltrane, Jim Hall, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and many more.

In addition, there will be a special tribute to Alice Coltrane, led by her son Ravi, and featuring Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, and Detroit’s own Geri Allen. Jimmy Heath will perform with the Heath Brothers and make a guest appearance with the Wayne State University Big Band. Benny Golson will perform with the Temple University Big Band, under the direction of Terell Stafford, who will also play with his quartet.

The festival will also continue its “Come Monday” gospel programming, the Here & Now Stage for emerging artists, showcases for outstanding college and high school ensembles, a pre-festival club series, the KidBop area, and the increasingly popular Jazz Talk Tent.

And to top it all off, Detroit Jazz Fest will continue to provide the many special features that make it the hippest event around.
