Hi Guys,

I've got my Dip ABRSM coming up in a month (well, 4 weeks today) and I have to supply programme notes for the pieces I'm playing. Unfortunately, I'm really struggling to find information on any of them, but one of them in particular.
If any of you could offer any information on the following, I would be very grateful.

Weber: Variations in F
Copland: Quiet City
Himes: Concertino for Flugelhorn (and Brass Band)
Handel: Suite in D

Thanks,

Last night on my way home I was treated to a beautiful rendition of the Haydn concerto.

I never heard of the guy playing it. He was really a good player. You could hear clear cut ideas and technically perfect playing.
Here is the thing. (there is always a but) I wouldn't have played it that way at all.

I have spent a lot of time on the Haydn, trying to understand the piece. I was taught by a guy that is considered one of the best in the world. I know what he thinks about the piece because he sat next to me and told me and made notes in my part. He also warned me not to listen to recordings for interpretation advice. The player may have played it one way and because of engineering, it came out differently.

That's the only advice I didn't take from him. I have listened to a ton of people play the thing and, every time it's different.

A while back, Robin (Rowuk) said, to understand what Haydn meant, you have to listen to his other string works. I like that idea. I'm not a string player so I don't know what Mr. Haydn put in the original score. Did he put anything other than notes?(as in the trumpet part for the concerto) Maybe when I listen to a string quartet, I'm hearing what some arranger put in there in 1940.

I have come to the conclusion that there is no "Right" way to play the piece. Haydn didn't tell us and the concerto was put away for a hundred years. How could we know what he wanted?

i have heard different opinions about playing the hummel on the e flat trumpet versus the b flat. one school of opinions that i have heard say that one should stick with the larger horns (b flat, c) when possible and that an e flat trumpet is more of a crutch that should only be used if it is simply extremely difficult to play otherwise. the other school of thought is that for certain pieces it is preffered to play on the e flat trumpet because they produce a certain sound (or something like that i dont exactly remember...) anyway i was wondering if anyone could explain and elaborate on this. thanks

I am looking for a recording of Woodland Song by Eric Ball. I am going to be playing it for my grade 8, and I just received the music today, but I have been unable to find a recording of it anywhere. It is in the ABRSM grade 8 syllabus, listed as being for Flugel or Cornet.

I know it may be possible to buy a CD with the whole grade 8 syllabus on, but I don't really want to waste my money buying a whole CD just for one track.

So if anyone knows where I can find a recording, either cheaply or, preferably, for free, that would be very helpful.

Thanks

Honolulu Symphony cancels remaining 2009 concerts - Yahoo! News

HONOLULU – The Honolulu Symphony said Friday it's canceling concerts for the rest of the year and filing for bankruptcy, citing a big drop in donations.
The symphony, the oldest in the nation west of the Rocky Mountains, said it has $1 million in debt and doesn't have enough money to support operations into November and beyond.
The Honolulu Symphony Society's board of directors voted to file for Chapter 11 protection at a special meeting on Oct. 30. Papers will be submitted to court next week.
"We made payroll, even in this economy, through October. But when we reached toward the end of October, cash ran out and dried up," said Peter Shaindlin, the board's chairman.
Ticket sales have generally been OK, though weak at some recent events. Even so, ticket revenue covers only 30 percent of costs, and donations, which cover the remaining 70 percent, have dropped sharply during the recession.
"These are difficult economic times and everyone is doing whatever it takes to maintain the products and services they provide in our community while being economically prudent," executive director Majken Mechling said in a statement.
The 109-year-old body hopes to come back as a leaner and more efficient operation, but it's not clear when concerts will resume. The symphony is aiming for early next year, said spokeswoman Kristin Jackson said.
The symphony spends $4.1 million each year on payroll and benefits. Musician salaries account for the biggest single expense.
Mechling said the symphony can't continue to sustain a 64-piece orchestra, but she didn't say how many musicians the organization would have in the future.
The organization's finances have been in trouble for about two years.
In May 2008, an anonymous donor gave $1 million to cover almost two months of unpaid wages. Earlier this year, the symphony took a $2.1 million advance from its endowment to pay employees several months of back pay.
