I don't know if a lot of you out there know I've started making a bunch of custom trumpet mouhtpieces...

The following audio samples are raw with no added effects and totally live. Getting the shop up and running has taken a bit out of my efficiency. I literally went from one piece to the next with no breaks (not ideal when you go from a huge orchestral piece to an efficient lead piece in less than a minute). The differences are more noticeable in these audio clips:

ACB Clarke demo:

C scale demo:

a bit of slurs:

a quick taste of Arban:

sample of Stardust:

then a few higher scales:

Thanks again for listening. I will do the same tests for all the mouthpieces when they come in.

Custom mouthpieces based on a mold of your teeth

I am working on a way to make custom Wedge mouthpieces based on a mold of a players teeth. The technique would be for me to mail out a thin plastic disk a little bigger than the size of a mouthpiece rim. There would be a hole in the middle of the disk. The player would place it in warm water until it turns from white to clear. The disk is then removed from the water and inserted in the mouth between the front teeth and the lips at the point where the mouthpiece is placed. Then the player adds the horn and plays a middle C for about one to two minutes until the plastic cools. When cool the plastic gets very hard. Harder than the usual plastic mouth guards. The result is a perfect impression of the players teeth in the playing position at the point right under the mouthpiece.

The player would then mail the disk back to me. I would measure the radius of curvature of the dental impression in the horizontal and vertical axis under the mouthpiece rim and account for any offset of the upper and lower teeth. Based on the data I would program and CNC machine the optimal Wedge rim for the player.

I have already made the first impression of my own teeth this way and will begin programing my own rim based on the data this week. There is still lots of R and D to do, but would anyone be interested in such a product?

Cheers,
Dave

Hello,

As I play trumpet and flugelhorn in several classical and jazz bands for more than 2 decades, I wanted te try something completely different. So, several months ago I started playing cornet with a british brass band and am having a blast!

I play a Bach 3C on the cornet (I know, I know) but have problems with my range and especially my endurance.

On the trumpet and flugelhorn, I play Reeves mouthpieces (42M and 42F). I want to try a Reeves mouthpiece on cornet, but I know they are not the BBB standard. I tried several Wick moutpieces, but I totally hate those rims!

Anyone have experience with Reeves mouthpieces for cornet?

As a bunch of you know I do lots of horn demos... this time is a little
different. I was thinking I'd give a quick demo of 5 different models I
offer currently from my mpc line. I used the internal mic on the camera aas
my audio recorders batteries were fried. This is a live test from one mpc to
another.

The following pieces were used in this test:

1. ACB Papa Bear (huge .684 orchestral designed trumpet mouthpiece)
2. ACB 1 1/4C
3. ACB 3C
4. ACB 3CS
5. ACB TA 1 (my personal signature mouthpiece)

I'm not sure anyone's interested but thought it might be a fun test to do.

Cheers,

Here's the deal, played seriously up to age 20, changed career path, been playing almost a year now after taking 27 years off. Only play the picc, YTR-6810s (small bore horn), for wedding work.

I dont have the time to do infinite mouthpiece research so here's the question....looking for a mpc that is essentially a nice blend between these two. I really like the wide flat rim on the 13a4a but the cup is a tad to shallow near the rim edge and I tend to bottom out in it. The 14a4a, although an "a" cup is certainly deeper than the 13a4a, deeper than what i need.

Here's the animal I'm looking for in a stock mouthpiece, any manufacturer, expect Schilke (way too bright)

a 13a4a rim, but just a smidge wider
a cup, maybe slightly deeper than the 13a4a, especially at the rim edge

Also, because this horn is small bore, I understand that having a slightly more open throat and backbore could help open up the register a little better over high E flat. Comments?

I await the knowledge of the masses!!!

BTW, where in the U.S. is the best place to go and try out the largest variety of mouthpieces?
