Ive just bought an Eb rotary trumpet, with which Im really happy. It came with a 7c mouth piece the same as the one I use on my Bb. Im thinking of experimenting a bit with the mouth piece I use with it but my problem is that Im not 100% sure if the horn I have is a trumpet or a cornet. Is it the same in the Eb realm as the Bb one, where cornet and trumpet mouth pieces are different or are Eb trumpet mouth pieces and Eb cornet mouth pieces much of a muchness?

Any help you can give me to get to grips with this instrument would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Right now I am using a Reeves 43S/69 for lead playing. I was looking into trying out a Reeves 43S/692 (or possibly a Reeves "Jerry Hey" model) because on the Reeves website it says that the 43S/692 is a "Shallow mouthpiece with a large backbore. Good for players coming from the 43S/69 looking for a broader, less focused tone."

When I play lead I strive for that big, fat sound made famous by players like Conrad Gozzo, John Audino, Bernie Glow, etc.

Do you think the 692 backbore would be more ideal for achieving that type of sound (as opposed to a 69 backbore)?

Is the rim on the 5V (or 5MV) same or similar to the 5C?

Also, how does the Bach 5V compare to the Curry V cup mouthpieces? (is the Curry number system close to the Bach?)

Thanks!

I use an old Bach 1 1/4C in my Eb trumpets (soprano, not contra-alto), and was toying with the idea of buying something new instead of replacing the original. In reading the specs of some of the "new and improved" mouthpieces, I was struck by the number of times I read "based on the Bach 1 1/4/C", and/or variations thereof. This included those big-chunks-o'-metal type mouthpieces that claim to be so much better. In the end I decided to stick with what I've used for the past 35 years, thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I've tried a number of those big-chunk-o'-metal mouthpieces by various manufacturers and have to say that their claims seem to be pure baloney. In fact, I was reminded of a comprehensive study of sax mouthpieces done a number of years ago which demonstrated that the outside shape and construction material have absolutely no impact on a sax's sound, that the perceived differences exist only in the minds of players.

Is there really anything new and wonderful out there in the Eb soprano department? If there is, I'm all ears.

So lately the lead parts in Jazz band are starting to climb a little bit into the stratosphere (for me, anyways, I'm now called on to consistently play in the G on top of the staff to the high E range or so) and I've now got a few questions in terms of mouthpieces:

1) I'm not too sure whether a lead mouthpiece would be a worthwhile investment right now. Given the range in which I usually find myself, would a lead mouthpiece be something worth investing in?

2) A lot of people say lead mouthpieces "facilitate" the upper register. In what ways is this true? I'm sort of inclined to believe that it's a load of bunk that suddenly my range and endurance are going to go way up because of something like a new piece, but if I'm wrong here, correct me, please.

3) I'm especially looking for something that will really help the upper register sparkle - is a lead piece a good idea for this?

4) Perhaps most importantly, would a lead piece simply be detrimental to my development right now and should I stick with my 3C for this? I also have a Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz piece that I don't touch anymore for exactly this reason - I'm a little concerned that switching between these two pieces will hinder my development.

5) If a lead piece would be a good investment right now, can anyone recommend any good ones?

Pre-emptive thanks for your help.
