I'd like to teach myself to play the piano. (Unfortunately I can't afford lessons which I know is not good but this is just something I want to do for fun outside of the trumpet. I hear it also helps with composing and just musical ability in general.) I guess my first question is is this something that could be self taught well, or should I find a way to get some extra money and a teacher to at least learn the basics before teaching myself?

Does anyone have any good book suggestoins for starting out?

Are there things I need to watch out for? Bad habits like on the trumpet? (Pressure, ect.)

Thanks

A guy in the music store and I were talking about what different instrumentalists get (it seems perhaps a bit unreasonably) wound up about. We were laughing it up. Here's what we came up with.

Trumpet - MOUTHPIECES!
Guitar - Pickups and picks
(here's the funny two)
Clarinet - Ligatures (that's the thing that holds the reed on the mouthpiece)
Sax - Mouthpieces!!! (and any old ligature)
Drums - Sticks (maybe because they go through so many?)

Yes, I'm starting on a nice mouthpiece collection of my own. All in good fun. ROFL

Hi All
My brother-in-law is researching Max Goberman, a Broadway and Classical conductor during the 1950s or so. This research is a prelude to a possible book he is considering writing, and he has already held some preliminary interviews with musicians.

Is there anyone out there who played under Goberman, or knows someone who did (maybe their teacher), and would be prepared to participate in this project?

Anyone ever NOT want to go to a gig?

So, I've got a gig that I have to leave for in about 30 minutes, and I'm just not feeling it tonight. I'd rather just chill out at home, maybe watch a movie, listen to some music...tonight is one of those nights where I'd rather just stay home.

Fundamentally I know that once I get to the gig, I'm going to be happy to see my friends and I'll probably have a lot of fun playing, but right now I'm just not looking forward to dealing with the stuff that will ensue before I ever even get there, mainly the drive, traffic, finding parking, etc. Gig prep is done - I warmed up earlier and the chops are feeling pretty good today, so I'll probably play well.

I have to sing the first dance tonight - Lucky, by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat (duet with one of our lady singers) and maybe that has something to do with it - I never mind singing, but there is always a bit of extra pressure when you have to do it for one of the special dances.

Yeah yeah, I know - stop griping. At least I have a gig, right? :-)

Regardless of their "style," who would you say are the top (10) trumpet players in the U.S. today under the age of 60? I guess the primary criteria for this list would be name recognition first and accolades second.

I'm using the age of 60 to try to eliminate some living legends and to encourage mention of more so-called possible future legends.

I admit that I'm very out of touch with the trumpet scene. Other than the traditional "living legends" I would be hard pressed to be able to name any "high profile" trumpet players other than Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, Chris Botti and Rick Braun. Sorry...

14 of the original pieces are Ragtime which to varying degrees have been expanded in terms of form and structure using 19th century composition techniques.
You do not need to ask me persmission to use these pieces. I'm all but consigning them to the public domain.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking on this forum for a while, but this is my first post. Sorry it has to be such a downer, but hopefully someone can offer up some help.

About three weeks ago, I had surgery to remove a squamous cell carcinoma from the floor of my mouth. The doctors feel they got everything. The lymph nodes were removed from the right side of my neck. They were clean. I started playing trumpet again on Friday, 8/6/10. I blew just a few notes (part of an Arban's exercise (Ex.10, pg. 13)). The next day I played ALL of exercise 10. Yesterday, I played all of exercise 10, PLUS single tongued two octave scales from low F# - C above the staff. Progress is being made. Slow, but progress nonetheless.

Today I had a consultation with the Oncology Radiolgy department at the Mayo Clinic to see if radiation therapy might be right for me. The bottom line is that radiation is ENTIRELY my option. 15 - 20% chance of recurrence if I don't do radiation, but there are some possible side effects. The most disturbing side effect to me, as a trumpet player, is the possible loss of saliva production on my right side.

Bottom line: is there anybody on this forum who has experienced oral cancer? Have you undergone radiation? How did it effect you? How long did it take for you to get playing again?
