So today I was at the repair shop (one of the pistons on my Strad needed to be re-lapped) and I asked the repair guy if he could sell me a set of brass valve guides for the aforementioned Strad. He said he could, but remarked that he liked the plastic ones much better because they do not wear out the actual guide slots on the inside of the valve like metal ones would. In the end, I decided to stick with my current plastic ones.

Is there any truth in what he said? I see so many horns, especially Yamahas, with metal valve guides, and haven't really heard of this problem mentioned before.

After 5 long months I just received my new horn! Felix was a pleasure to work with and answered all the questions I had.

I don't have time for a real in depth review of this. All I can say is wow! It looks great and plays better. It has a really fat low register and it's easier to get into the high range. Plays effortlessly in tune. The valves are very responsive out of the box, before even breaking them in.

I will try to go more into it when I put the horn down :)

Pictures to come.

Hi folks,
I have been playing a Yamaha 6310Z for the last few years and decided to buy an 8310Z after falling for it at the shop. Since I got home and have played it longer I'm having a horrible time getting used to it. I get tired really quickly, sound breaking up, etc. It has only been about 2 weeks so far but I'm starting to get worried. How long should I keep trying before I give up and go back to the 6310Z?
I'm a pretty good player, although not a lead or high tone type. Usually play lower parts in legit and solo parts in jazz. Maybe this horn is better suited to "stronger" players?
I have been playing a Bach 3C with the 6310Z. I've also heard that the 8310z is finicky about mouthpieces...
Any ideas or advice?
Thanks in advance.

I have a vintage holton heim #1 cornet mouthpiece which I use in my Conn new wonder long model cornet. I would like to find a modern identical replacement, bach or otherwise but I have yet to figure out the often varied way that mouthpieces are measured so I would be just guessing at the exact measurements. Can anyone advise me? thanks, Jack

So I was searching through craigslist the other day and found a black and gold Jupiter pocket trumpet for $200.00, brand new. I wanted one 5 or 6 years ago whe they sold for around $400.00 but thought that was a bit much for a toy. It arrived today and I tried it with my Monette B6 and it was kind of squirrelly pitch-wise. I then tried my B 4 Flumpet mouthpiece and it was a nice match. My fifth, sixth, and seventh grade band students will love it. N plus one strikes again! Anyone else have any history with this instrument?

....as much as I hate to admit it, I was wrong on my evaluation of the Chinese trumpets I own (Wiseman; Eastman, Berkely, Vento & others). while they are quite decent horns, their quality of materials, workmanship and sound don't really equal that of the "finer" horns - specifically, my Hub Van Laar B3. This instrument is just in another league! OTOH, there are also some well-made custom and "brand-name" American and European horns that also fall short of the Van Laar......in sum, Rowuk did say words to the effect that "once I buy a Monette or a Van Laar or similar horn, that would put the Chinese horns in perspective.." (or words to that effect). So, Rowuk - you were right! My hat is off to you......:play:

I have just acquired a french besson flug, and was wondering what the manufacture date was. The serial number is higher than on any list that I have seen for french bessons...so I was wondering if anyone had info on the date of this horn. Here is what the bell says.

SYSTEME PROTOTYPE (on a banner)
FB (stylish font)
F. BESSON
BREVETE
S.G.D.G
96 RUE D'ANGOULEME
66 HAUTES RECOMPENSES
The serial number is 435020.

It plays beautifully...Good intonation, GREAT sound, and GREAT response. I have check several databases and done several searches and can't get much good information. Does anyone have any ideas, thoughts, or experiences to share?
