So I have been playing trumpet for about 7 years and i have the King silver flair 2055t, I'm playing on a Bach 1 1/2c Mouthpiece. I'm looking for a new horn. I'm really into smooth nice tone, like Miles Davis. I dont like brassy tone like Maynard Ferguson. I got my tone pretty much down the way I like it but my music teacher says he thinks I'm ready for a better horn, one that gives more fullness, depth. I'm a very smooth jazz player, i don't play to brassy' unless It's necessary. I like takin' it easy on my horn...So if anyone can help me figure out what horns i should try out and start savin up for that'd be great.I dont know if this matter but i am probably going to end up having a carrer in music. thanks again

I have been shopping for a new flugel. I narrowed my choice to Yamaha based on multiple favorable postings on the web. Prices are reasonable.

I had difficulty deciding between the 631OZ (Shew) and the 731. The 731 has a larger bore and is discribed (by Yamaha) as being easier to play for the average trumpet player. Ive read conflicting postings on this. Some ratings have said the 631 is a better playing horn.

The 631 has a tighter bore but it comes standard with a third valve trigger and it is not substantially more $. Ultimately, I think I will be happy with the 631.

Hopefully this is the best decision.

I would apprecaite your thoughts on these two horns in the hands of a an amateur.

Would a few of the repair guys out there give us the benefits of their experience regarding repairs and how they typically affect the sound of a horn. A repair expert recently told me everyone seems to look at the bell for dents -but the leadpipe is much more critical.
A few questions I'd be interested in knowing answers to are:
Does removing a dink or ding typically affect the sound of the horn -if so, which area is most important?
Crack repairs -I hear people say they are soldered or welded -does it affect sound?
Some old horns often require patches? Is one ususally able to tell sound wise?
Bracing reweld or solder -as long as it goes back where it was-does it typically affect sound?
My questions are "affect sound most of the time"-I know that there is always the possibility a small repair might make a big difference and that on rare occassions a big repair might make no difference. Just share what you think is the case mosrt of the time with such repair.
Thanks,
Steve

And a Kanstul 1502 on the way!

I play a Benge and also a Bach Stratavarious C both with gold plating. Both nice horns and I have had both of them probably 10 years, look like new.

I purchased a Schilke B2 for my oldest son when he started 11th grade for concert band. After college we still have the horn here and I just got it out and cleaned it up. I am trying to decide whether to keep it as a third horn for myself or sell it. I really do not have a clue what something like that is worth, so probably if it is not worth that much I will keep it for myself. I have always liked playing the B2, feels light, great sound, no valve issues ever at all like I have once in a while with my benge. The only thing that I did not like for my son was the bell is somewhat thinner then other horns making it a lot easier to put small dings in.
The B2 Silver Plating is about perfect, but it does have some small dings upper bell area and back in the tubing opposite of the mouthpiece evidently where the horn had been layed down. It plays perfect and valves work fine.
Any idea what something like this is worth so I can make a decision on what to do with it.
Thanks,
Rick

yes I know these aren't the best options but they were in the general budget.

Kohlert 410
Bach Prelude

I also had her try out a few mouthpieces I had (I have a 7c 3c 11/2c (bach) 17c(giardinelli) and a jet tone 1m.

she told me that she liked her sound the best on the 1m and that it was the most comfortable .

which mouthpiece is most like a 1m

thanks.

I am interested in cautionary tales of selling or trading good or even great horns in favor of what is believed to be "the one" only to regret the transaction later.

I have a 1977 Schilke that I love, but I have never felt quite at home with it. I am jonsin' for a 1950's Committee but I don't think the wife will let me drop the coin to add to my collection, and I also fear regretting the sale or trade of the horn that I grew up with (been my main axe for almost 15 years).

So great wise TrumpetMaster, scare me out of making a bad choice!

Yesterday I picked up my 1946 Buescher Aristocrat from Charlie Melk. This horn was bought for $56 on ebay and it was a lot better condition than I expected. The bell had been crunched and opened it appeared at least twice but overall the rest of the horn was solid, and the valves are tight and fast. Tighter than my 400 valves, even.

Charlie did the usual work, and had slight issues with the bell, finding some cracks. Reluctant to heat the side of the bell enough to use brazing wire, he closed that crack with silver solder. Another crack didn't go all the way through and was in the middle of the extravagant engravings, so he left it alone. These cracks are noticeable from close but not from a foot or two away.

Then came the custom lacquer job. As I am sure you've already noticed by the picture... it's red! I has the main body of the horn colored red and the slides, caps, etc. in gold. I think it came out pretty nicely given what he started with.

An additional bonus, when the horn was crunched up, it played a lot tighter than my 400. Now, however, with the bell straight and round and the mouthpipe straight and round, it plays almost identically (short test) with the 400, so I'm quite happy about that.

The red is a bit of whimsey on my part, but it will look good for the Christmas concert.
I'm a new member on this forum as also a newbie in regards to this instrument that is fascinating my mind more and more! God I love it!!! :play:
Now as I read all the threads about beginners I still feel the need for an advice in a special price offer I got to buy a new trumpet.
It's about the Zweiss Brass Professional Grade Trumpet, (found here Zweiss Brass Professional Grade Trumpet,Mumbai,India) which some of you probably not even heard of. Yeah, you'll say another Asian disaster!
But I'm interested more in knowing if anybody heard something about it and better if it was tested. Couldn't find any reviews on the net. I just want to buy a beginners trumpet so I can learn as much as possible and then advance!

So it's thumbs up or not :D

Thanks in advance,

I suppose trumpets get used up. How do you tell when a trumpet is no longer worth fixing to be used as a playing, rather than collector's item?
Is it possible (or, rather, good) to replate a silver trumpet, or does this process cause damage?
