I recently purchased a 64 olds studio. I am not really a collector but usually enjoy playing vintage horns and found this one for a good price. My question is about the playing characteristics of this horn more specifically the upper regester. It sounds and feels very narrow and stuffy and was wondering wether this was just me or does this horn just play that way.

I was told by a friend that he saw a trumpet in a local Pawn Shop. Thought it was a Martin and had a price tag of $1999 on it. So, needless to say, I went and looked. It's a Committee, serial no 137xxx. The horn has been relacquered and the engraving is harder to read, valves look pretty good, slides ok. The biggest problem I saw was on the bell crook there were 2 butcher job patches. Didnt try to play it since it was out of my price range. Also seems priced way too high. If anyone wants to contact this shop let me know and I'll give you the phone no.

With christmas coming up I thought it might be worth asking my family for a vintage trumpet in the not too expensive price range, I'm looking for something a bit bright.. the horns that spring to mind are the getzen super delux, vega pee shooter with the key change mechanism, conn 22B and maybe a king liberty. I'm tempted to concentrate on the getzen and vega but would appreciate some oppinions on the above and any other suggestions. I can appreciate that I'd be best to try them but I dont think it will be practical.
Thankyou

I was kinda looking for a vintage Conn or King Trumpet and slid in a bid at 2 seconds and won this dern thing. What it is, I am not so sure. The listring called it a 1946 Conn Trumpet. There is a pic of the number lloking like 12 and possibly something after that, but seller didn't say there was a B or anything else. From what I read on this forum and on the Conn site, the only 12B's made were all with Coprion Bell, but apparently this is all brass. I found one post that claimed a couple brass bell 12's could have slipped out due to a mix up. Would this make it more valuable?? If ony a one or two existed? Well I'm excited to receive it....just bid and won today. There are pics at Picasa Web Albums - Tom - Conn Trumpet ... and the listing was 150387401684 if you can still see it. Please excuse the typos... maybe its Firefox or maybe just me?

Since I realigned the valves on my Olds Super/Ultrasonic, it has turned out to be an amazing instrument. Very resonant in all registers. It has a really nice core to the sound. So the last couple of weeks I've been playing my Eclipse MR, Olds Super/Ultrasonic, Conn 40B, and my Leblanc Paris large bore. They are all really fine horns. I'm tempted to get my son's Strad 37 out and see how it stacks up against these horns.

The Leblanc is a horn I bought for $25 in the late 1970's. It had been run over by a motorcycle. I was able to overhaul it (I worked in a shop full time then) but the mouthpipe was never right. After I straightened it the taper was messed up and it had a really weird intonation. A couple of years ago I put a Bach mouthpipe on it. Now it really sings. It might be the best horn I own.

I feel a little weird owning so many nice playing horns, but I'm still wanting to get an Olds Recording and a Conn 48B. I guess I'm a horn glutton.

Hi new to this site. Just purchaced an olds studio on ebay that was being sold for Cluade Gnocchi. Trying to get in contact with him to find out more about this horn. Not really a collector just looking for a new full time horn and had always been told that the olds were great playing horns. I have had it for two days now and am finding this to be true. Does anyone have any useful info for me?

I recently came into possession my grandfathers old Conn horn. Although in research on the Conn Loyalist site the serial number (318992) shows a manufatured date of 1947 I have the original purchase receipt dated June 1940 which I have no doubt is correct. The serial number on receipt matches the serial number on horn. Oddly enough the Conn Loyalist site information on my serial number date range says that it was not manufactured in Elkhart unless engraved on bell (it is).

The receipt lists the model as a 48B but engraved near mouthpiece is 40B. Silver-plated with gold inside of bell, in original case. Overall in excellent shape with some minor wear marks. No dents or dings anywhere. Engraved and flute playing pan on bell. With cleaning/polishing and a tune up this would be an incredible horn. Obviously only one owner, my grandfather.

Any information on horn, date of manufacturer and value would be appreciated. Considering selling.

Thanks,
Darryl

Hi friends ... just bought a beautiful old cornet... but it doesn't play as good as it looks.... kind of stuffy - especially on an open C .... I pulled out all of the slides and they all make a great pop except for the larger slide on the outer right that attaches to the 3rd valve and then winds around the tubing to the mouthpiece receiver (sorry I don't know the technical name for that slide)...That one slide is silent when it's pulled out ....I'm no expert but from what I've read I'm guessing that means poor compression or a leak somewhere... without taking it in to a repair shop (which will defeat the good price I paid it for)... is there anything I can do myself to remedy the compression and make the slide pop ....(It does have a new cork on the water key) .... thanks as always for any advice ....

Everything functions perfectly. The valves are very smooth, quiet, and fast....until you play the horn. When playing, the 3rd valve becomes sluggish, and the second valve is now displaying the same symptoms. I stop playing and cycle the valves and they feel smooth and fast once again. Start playing, and 3rd valve is sluggish again. Anyone know what this means?
