Since Indiana Band didn't exist until 1928, and the serial number indicated as it appeared to be, circa 1931, I dropped the seller a note and gave him the correct data as well as the webpages that could confirm everything. I looked to see if this has been covered here in the past, but couldn't find any reference to it, but I've got a question for all you Martin Handcraft Imperial folks out there.

Between the lion's paws (on the bell engraving) there is a number or a letter. I've only seen, or heard of, either a "37" or an "M". On the other trumpet blog site, there was speculation that it was the year of manufacture. This is doubtful since some of the horns, with "37" were manufactured in other years, earlier or later. This also wouldn't account for an "M" on other horns, like the one Mike (trumpetMD) had that Trent previously owned. The large bore Imperial (that A.N.A pointed out that recently sold on Ebay for $1550+ had "M" on the bell between the paws, as does the one I just purchased.

So, what I'm wondering is: could this be a bell designation? Wasn't Martin copying the Bach 37 bell on some of their horns? I read elsewhere that the "M" was for Committee (COMM=M) So, I guess it stands to reason that with the earlier Handcraft Imperials, you were getting a Bach 37 type bell. Then with the advent of the Committee in the late-30s, a Committee bell was also available on the Imperial Handcraft.

Any other thoughts on this...

I went to the home where she lives [she is in a facility for older folks and others that need care]. she had removed her valves and had them in the wrong order. the horn was a mess, the slides were stuck, the m.p. was stuck and the horn was so dirty it was green where the slides were supposed to move and I couldn't see down the m.p. I took her my old King Master to play and she was a happy camper. I took the horn to my favorite tech and all around good guy and he removed the m.p. and looked down the lead pipe and the horn was really nasty [m.p. was almost tototally closed. I left the horn and he unstuck all the slides cleaned the horn and put new corks in. I put the horn out in the garage and today got it out to mess with. I put in a Kelly 4B and this horn plays sweet. I have no idea when it was made #1348XX made in L.A. Do all the recording cornets play this well and how well do the trumpets of this era play [Recording]?

First off, it's a Trumpet, not a Coronet. It's silver (possibly silver-plated?).

I found the the number "709" stamped on the valve body, under the "1 2 3" that mark the valves. I also found the same number stamped on the first bend in the lead pipe.

The only other marks I found on it was the words "Student Model" and "American Made", which is surrounded by some type of big leaf design engraved in the bell.

I think it's in the original case, but it's in rough shape.

"709" on the valve body
http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...192012_004.jpg

"709" on the lead pipe bend
http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...192012_003.jpg

"Student Model" and "American Made" engraving on the bell
http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...192012_001.jpg

Case it came to me in
http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/...192012_002.jpg

I posted the question as far as getting help identifying the trumpet in a brass/trumpet discussion forum, and the answer I got was that it was most likely made in the 1940's or 1950's, and that it's "what was/is called a 'Stencil' horn, most likely manufactured by Conn, or similar manufacturer at the time. The 709 was most likely the model number - but because this was a student model, stencil horn for a music store, or distribution company - there is probably not more information available."

I would like to fix it up to play it, but I want to know if it's worth it.

The valves all move freely, but all the slides are stuck shut.

The supports have all come loose at some point in it's life and someone did a VERY poor job of trying to solder them back on, and one must have broken off at some point because neither of them match.

The bell section that attaches to the valve body has also come loose and again, someone did a VERY poor job of trying to solder it back together.

There are some minor dings and dents here and there, but none that interfere with it's playability.

It does have a pretty decent sound, if I hold the bell on.

If you have any clues, and have the time to get back to me on it, I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have no idea why. I think maybe it was because I thought people liked my shiny gold Eclipse. The Eclipse is a great horn, but wow, the 40B is so much easier on the loud jobs. I was beating myself to death in the first set. I couldn't hear myself and was (I imagine) overblowing to compensate. I was pretty beat at the end of the first 90 minute set. I switched to the 40B and cruised the rest of the way.

so ,that's a real low serial number....I'd assume it's a special model............

included in the case is a leaflet about the Renaissance trumpet... the fotos look identical....is that what the RA stands for??? renaissance artist...or renaissance advance???

I picked up this horn on eBay for chump change simply out of curiosity and novelty. It has a nice bright tone, plays fairly easily, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like a Bb/A horn. It has no brand markings anywhere, but it does have a serial number. I've talked to all kinds of trumpet specialists, a couple of professors, brought it up on Facebook, other forums, music stores, and nobody's been able to help me figure out what this thing is. With all of the research I've done, I'm thinking ROUGHLY 1920s, MAYBE HN White. :dontknow: On a side note, I do have the trim ring that goes around the pipe just after the main slide. You can see it sitting in the case. Gets rid of that ugly spot there. Problem is, when I put it on the slide doesn't want to fit back in.

I'm just getting back into playing the horn , haven't played since high school over 16 years ago. I just picked up a 1951 Conn 48B Vocabell from the local classifieds for $25! I almost didn't buy it cause I'm not familiar with vintage horns and I just thought it was an old weird looking piece of crap. I figured for $25 I could use it to learn restoring and tinkering on so I got it anyway. After a little research it seems this is a fairly rare horn and was a top model pro back in the day which is exciting for me. I'm amazed at how easy it is to play and how amazing it sounds compared to my old 74' Bach Strad I had. The Conn is a much better horn to my feel and ears, even in it's current condition which needs work. Anyway, I'm trying to decide what level of restoration I want to take the Conn to. I'm thinking I'll just do everything shy of a re-laquer cause I don't want to put too much money into it at this point and don't want to risk changing the sound. Any thoughts?

http://s1175.photobucket.com/albums/...rrent=48b1.jpg

http://s1175.photobucket.com/albums/...rrent=48b2.jpg

http://s1175.photobucket.com/albums/...rrent=48b2.jpg

<fieldset class="fieldset"> <legend>Attached Images</legend>

 48b 3.jpg

I don't see how it could be. No buying it away from Ebay, none of the usual signs. But something about being from the collection of Ronald Bell is sounding very familiar. A large bore with a 5 bell should be an interesting horn.
