Unhappy Airy Sound with High Notes

I can make my way up to a DOUBLE C on most days, but I find that sometimes I just can't do it, even after only a few seconds after I just did it Like, I'll play up to a G (octave above staff) fine, put down the horn for 30 seconds, pick it up again, and not be able to do it. Is it normal for that to happen, anyone else experience this? just an airy sound with a squeaky/airy tone.

I am using a Yamaha 11B4 mouthpiece, jaw slightly forward, tongue arched to make an "eee" sound, very little pressure on the mouthpiece, tight corners, same settings every time.

Re: Airy Sound with High Notes

Let's make sure we are talking about the same notes.

Tuning note C...third space in the staff.

High C is an octave above tuning note C

Double C is an octave above High C or two octaves above the Tuning C

The Doubles START at Double C...so Double G is ABOVE Double C.

Triple C would be an octave above Double C or three octaves above the Tuning note C.

Re: Airy Sound with High Notes

Sorry, I've heard too many different definitions, I mean 2 octaves above tuning C (3rd space).

And the G, one octave above the top of the staff.

No problem,

That would be Double C and High G.

Re: Airy Sound with High Notes

It sounds to me like you are using force to get the notes. When you put the horn down, the lips swell (like anything else on your body after it gets beat up) and gone is your range.

Try practicing for a month up high at volumes no louder than mp - piano would even be better. Clarke etudes are very good for this. If that doesn't work, you are not ready!

Hitting high notes is USELESS if you do not provide musical content, and that reliably.

Re: Airy Sound with High Notes

Well, it seems to me this problem has pretty much sorted itself out now. Took a couple days break from the trumpet and went back and my embouchure was back! I guess I overworked myself, wont be doing that again, I guess you learn from your mistakes!

If you don't trash your face from time to time, you are not working hard enough. There is NOTHING wrong with an occasional face-waste. Just don't make a habit of it AND remember getting back to the basics is generally the cure!
