    Alison Balsom, what and why

Alison Balsom, trumpet - Peoples Symphony Concerts | Alison Balsom, trumpet In that video, What is she playing? Some sort of keyed trumpet? And why? What are the advantages over a valved trumpet? It does look like the finger travel is a lot less...Faster?

    It's a rotary-valved piccolo.

Rotary valved instruments can provide a great definition between notes. More difficult to slur smoothly though.

Beautiful playing from Alison. Does she ever clam?

Ewanmains, I find it much easier to slur on my Scherzer rotary than my Schilke P5-4. I also find the piston valve Schilke has much more definition between notes. The rotary is a much more fluid sounding and playing instrument.

    Dburn,

Great clip ... I always enjoy hearing her talk about the music she's playing, you really get a sense of why she's so good. She started playing at 7, so that helps too. Her in-cathedral recorded Bach album is a must for anyone who loves J.S.

What happens if your instrument has no rotary or piston valves ... and is made of plastic?

I also find the rotary easier to slur. The reason is that they do not block the airflow as long when activating them. They don't have to move as far as they only rotate one quarter turn.
Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
