| New Friend | alternate fingering For a portion of my marching band music it will be alot easier to use the third valve instead of 1-2 due to the visual demands (horn moves). Is there any disadvantage to doing this? I've always used the "normal" fingerings and i always thought the others were out of tune. Thanks in advance for any advice. Brian |

| Yes, most of the 1/2 combinations are quite sharp. It drives me nuts when people play middle A, first line E, high A, middle C# on the C trumpet. Third valve is your next line of defense when it's inconvenient to use your slide/trigger. The slide gives you more fine tuning capability, that's why it's preferable but 3rd is great. ML |

| Play an E open. Now play it with the following fingerings; 12, 3, 123. Also try 1/3 with the third slide out. Listen for the difference in tone colors. It has to do with the various overtone series' produced by adding more valves and where the notes lie in harmonic series. ML |

| Mezzo Forte User | false fingering is really cool if your going to use it in solo, however it doesnt work well if your playing as a horn-section. |
